The Champion (Essanay, 1915). The Champion (Essanay, 1915). This film, Charlie Chaplin's third for Essanay, was certainly (up to that time) one of his best as far as plotting, characterization, and humor goes. Chaplin plays a down and out tramp who becomes the gym's champ with the help of his lucky horseshoe and his faithful bulldog. Edna Purviance and Bud Jamieson co-star, with Bronco Billy Anderson, a founder of Essanay and the cinema's first major cowboy star, and comedian Ben Turpin making cameo appearances. Original posters from this early Charlie Chaplin film are extremely scarce.
