Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
Adam van Vianen’s ewer of 1614 figures prominently among the silver treasures being offered to the Roman conqueror Scipio in this painting. This piece was so strange and unique, that painters used it to conjure up unknown worlds from the distant past. No other work of art was painted as often during the 17th century as this ewer.
In a fantasized architectural setting Scipio stands between his men on a platform. In front of it is the woman who was offered him with her lover. The parents of the woman kneel before the general and offer him gold and silver objects, including the famous drinking horn of Adam van Vianen.
